orthern Ireland Food Chain Certification (NIFCC) is a certification body established by the Northern Ireland Agri-food industry as a non-profit making service provider to the industry. NIFCC faced a significant challenge, particularly when it came to carrying out farm inspections across the country. Their previous system heavily relied on completing farm inspections in person using pen and paper, a process that brought about its own issues such as paper can get lost, handwriting can be hard to understand, human error can occur when writing it up, information could be missed and as you can imagine with the Northern Irish weather… rain can damage paper.
Their challenge was double pronged however, further than needing to address how farm inspections were completed on site, we also needed to address how they were managed in the office by the administration team.
Approach
To address these challenges, we continue to work closely with the customer since 2008 to provide them with the best digital solution possible. This bespoke solution utilises a wide array of modern technologies such as:
Agile Software Methodology to ensure concise, clear planning, communication and delivery throughout the software solution.
Mobile Agility which is our own in-house software product, based around the MERN stack. This provides farm inspectors across Northern Ireland with a clean, fast and modern application on their iPads, allowing farm inspections to be carried out with a user-friendly interface.
Web Portal this allows the administration team in the office keep track of everything an inspector records on site and manage that process throughout its entirety
Solution / Benefits
By Introducing no SQL cloud-based databases we can establish change streams that will ensure a solid connection between devices and backend databases, the intention is this will improve performance and a lower risk of data loss.
Improved data accuracy and efficiency. Inspections are now carried out more efficiently, they contain fewer human errors/missing data. Saving the customer both time and money.
Moving away from the old paper-based system where inspections were allocated out physically via post, we’re now positively contributing to the environment cutting down on this waste.
Inspections can now be done remotely via a video call, saving the customer money on travel costs for the inspector but also saving the inspector time, allowing them to carry out more inspections in a working day.
Implementation of an audit trail for inspections, allowing the administration team see a history of what’s been and done and well is crucial for legal proceedings.
